We want feedback on a special rate variation to help meet the cost of building the New Marrickville Library.
In order to provide the kind of new Library the community wants, Council will need to raise a total of $30 million. Seven million dollars has already been earmarked from Council reserves. To raise the additional $23 million, Council is proposing a special rate increase of 3.6% (an average of $1 per week for residents and $6.70 per week for businesses) with the cost spread out over 15 years to minimise the impact on current residents.
Without a special rate increase, Council will have insufficient resources to build the new Library.
Council is asking for community feedback on the proposal to increase rates above the normal annual increases in order to pay for the New Marrickville Library. Tell us your thoughts in the online discussion.

Among wide ranging reform proposals the draft Plan proposes cutting red tape, encourages more Council partnerships and resource sharing, and reviewing the rate pegging system and funding models for councils.
Marrickville Council must submit any comments on the draft plan to the Division of Local Government by Wednesday 15 February 2012, so residents and read more

Marrickville Matters
Marrickville Matters will be delivered to your door in the next two weeks. Check out page 5 for more ideas about what our community wants to see in the new library.
Patricia and her granddaughter have been visiting the library every week for the last two years.
"I'd like to see an annexed area for parents and grandparents to browse through magazines and newspapers with a space for their young kids to sleep. I like to look at landscapes – a garden. They have wonderful services, like the storytime and games for kids. I'd like to see that continue in the new library but in a larger space."
