ok
Success!

GREEN CANOPY: I would like to see –

- Many more street trees, especially shade trees.

- Control of Energy Australia’s pruning practices & do appropriate planting under power lines.

- Removal of concrete & bitumen encased around a large percentage of the street trees & put garden beds around them instead. Cars should not be able to park right up to the trunks.

- Use porous surfaces around street trees rather than encasing them in cages.

- Plant 3-4 metre saplings to prevent vandalizing. Council accepts the loss of 90-95% of new tree planting. I think this is a waste of money & resources. New trees should be watered for more than 12 weeks.

- Campaigns to encourage the community to look after the street tree out front, especially watering new plantings & garden beds.

- More large shade trees in our parks. The parks are beautiful, but those that don't have sporting fields usually have trees around the periphery or along pathways. eg, Enmore Park & Sydenham Green. This makes these parks unusable during summer.

- Trees & undergrowth should be planted along the railway lines to buffer the noise & make the area beautiful.

- Establish a Significant Tree Register, do a Tree Inventory & map the canopy.

- Council should provide greater funding & staffing to the Parks & Gardens Dept & also start programs that educate & involve the community in greening our streets.

-The tree planting is sufficient in Trevellian Plaza & outside Newtown & Marrickville Town Halls. The Pines should stay in front of Marrickville Town Hall because of the hundreds of birds that live in them, but quite a number of shade trees could be planted to provide a cool space for people to gather.

- Our section of Parramatta Road & the Princess Hwy look shocking. If Pacific Hwy can have tall street trees along the whole of its length when it is no wider, I cannot see why we cannot do the same here.

GREEN COMMUNITY: I would like to see -

- A space for a community garden in Marrickville South. I find it hard to believe there is nowhere suitable.

- Verge gardening should be encouraged.

- Many more water gardens.

- Continued rejuvenation of the Cooks River & Council to encourage Burwood Council? to remove the concrete ‘drain’ that is the Cooks River in that area.

- Council to arrange community events for greening the locality, not just the national days.

- Community education about global warming.

- Meet the carbon reduction targets Council set in 1996 as a minimum.

- I was shocked at the amount of plastic bottles floating up the Cooks River last weekend. There is obviously a need for more storm water collection as well as community education about littering, dumping of garbage & community pride.

STREETSCAPE:

- Apart from greener streets with more trees & shade, Marrickville & Illawarra Roads really need to be cleaned up.

- Same with Marrickville Station surrounds.

- Stop high-rise & inappropriate, overly modern development. Why can’t we have the pride of Haberfield for example? Let’s keep what remaining heritage we have.

- Prevent businesses from painting their buildings/shopfronts with garish colours & massive signage.

TRAFFIC:

- Stop 19 metre trucks from using the area, especially Warren Road.

- Stop trucks parking under the Fig trees in Carrington Rd & Renwick Street.

- Residents should not suffer parking restrictions because of trucks.

- Stop pushing traffic through a few residential streets leaving nearby streets empty.

- Put traffic lights at Renwick Street & Illawarra Road to allow traffic to leave Woolworths directly into Illawarra Road, rather than going the long way around the residential streets to get to Illawarra Road.

- Air traffic is getting progressively worse.

- Roads & footpaths are in general disrepair. Pedestrians & bike riders are often at risk from traffic.

Many thanks for this opportunity.

"}
