Public Domain Study

Public Domain

We seek your input into our Public Domain study!

“Public spaces are enticing, lively and accessible, with a street life that connects the community and welcomes visitors. As well as being clean and well maintained, these areas are sustainable and are alive with trees and birds, grandparents and children, pedestrians and cyclists.” Part of ‘Sharing Marrickville’s Vision 2021’ from the Marrickville Community Strategic Plan

Council is undertaking a Public Domain Study (PDS) project. The PDS project will assist Marrickville Council in improving the look and feel of Council-run public spaces such as streets, lanes, footpaths and urban squares like Trevallion Plaza, throughout the Marrickville Council area. The PDS project commenced in March 2012 and is intended to be completed by September 2014.

The PDS project has been undertaken in two parts.  Funding through the Local Environmental Plan and Development Control Plan review process allowed Council to undertake an earlier sub-project, titled Public Domain Concept Designs, that generated master plans for three areas, Marrickville centre (Illawarra Road), Dulwich Hill Station centre and St Peters ‘triangle’ precinct.  Click here to view the Public Domain Concept Designs Report and summary presentations

These master plans will be reviewed based on the main PDS, which will include holding public workshops for these areas, along with the other master plan areas being undertaken. Therefore Council is still seeking public comment on these master plans - see input options below.

The second and main part of the PDS project will include extensive engagement, field surveying, a public domain strategy (providing broad strategies for the whole LGA), Policy review/DCP inclusion, Public domain code, review of the master plans undertaken in the Public Domain Concept Designs and the following master plans:

  • Entire Marrickville centre (Marrickville Road and Illawarra Road)
  • Dulwich Hill centre
  • Petersham centre and connection to Petersham Station
  • Lewisham centre
  • Newtown/Enmore centre
  • Addison Road centre (between Enmore Road and Addison Road Community Centre)
  • Selected laneway sites

The main part of the project has been delayed about 12 months from the original schedule. The project is now scheduled to run between July 2013 and September 2014.  The proposed schedule is broadly as follows:

  • Initial community workshops in September/October 2013 and prepare drafts of the public domain strategy, Policy review/DCP inclusion, Public domain code by the end of 2013 and consult on these.
  • Further initial community workshops on the master plan sites in February and prepare drafts of master plans by the end of April and consult on these.
  • All outputs are planned to be finalised by September and be reported to Council for endorsement.

Please provide your input.

Responses may relate to specific places anywhere within the Marrickville Council area, including the master plan areas (Please note the location). It could be identifying places that possess great qualities.

Alternatively, responses may relate to generic or broad strategic aspects.
