In an unassuming residential street in Sydney’s Inner West, a major transformation has taken place whereby 150m2 of concrete verge has been replaced by 27 new nature-strip gardens.

A culmination of more than eight months planning and organising, this project would not have been possible if it were not for the willingness of 26 households to participate in a collaborative approach to streetscape improvements over the long term

Central Ave Marrickville is looking greener and cared for thanks to the efforts of residents who have participated in this Sustainable Streets project. A non-invasive, clumping bamboo (Bambusa textilis var. gracilis) is being trialled to improve the visual amenity of the area which was devastated in recent years with the loss of a mature Camphor Laurel that had previously provided a leafy aspect to the end of the street. The garden was constructed by Council with the agreement that residents would provide the plants and maintain the garden.

The Planting Day and handover was held on Sunday 17th of February, within in a short time neighbours installed the plants and removed litter from the vicinity. Finishing with a delicious BBQ, the relaxed ambient mood provided an opportunity to socialise and discuss future plans for street improvements.

This Whole-of-Street approach is made possible where locals agree to care for and maintain the gardens over the long term.

Lincoln Street residents petitioned Council in June 2012 to help improve the local environment by providing additional green space in the form of verge gardens. This community action resulted in 8 tonnes of concrete being removed to make way for 14 new verge gardens.

Over the past twelve months 267 new verge gardens where added to Marrickville’s streets which represents an addition of 1617m2 of well received public green space. The majority (89%) of these gardens have been created through concrete removal and replaced with a diversity of low growing plants. Nature-strip gardens are a welcome relief from the build form and help to create a more liveable environment for Marrickville’s residents.

In addition, 78 residents participated in Sustainable Streets events held throughout last year showing a continued groundswell of support for local initiatives and a commitment from individuals to collaborate with Council in a co-design, co-management and co-maintenance approach to streetscapes projects. Congratulations to everyone involved.

The initial request made by Peter Manning back in June 2012 to “free the street tree” was the start of a six month journey punctuated by the ups and downs of allowing for due process to take its course.

With the addition of three new street trees (Waterhousia floribunda - Weeping Lilly Pilly) and approximately 180 small shrubs, herbaceous plants and ground covers, the area has been transformed from a concrete jungle to a series of native gardens. This project provides a fine example of what can be achieved when Council and the community work together to improve the streetscape.

On a warm summers Sunday just one week before Christmas seventeen local residents, numerous children and one dog gathered together to remove weeds and help regenerate the native ferns colonising the rock wall located in Ruby Street, Marrickville.

With the assistance of Councils Sustainable Streets Officer and Verge Crew, the equivalent of ten large green waste bins of weeds were removed from the area, which just goes to show what great results can be achieved when the community is willing to work together to improve their street.

The energy and enthusiasm made this event highly productive and in just a few short hours the rock wall was transformed. And with such a great turnout the area underneath the large fig tree was also tidied up just in time for a street Christmas party to be held next week.

New friendships were forged as neighbours from surrounding streets shared cold drink and a chat about their common interest to actively improve the local environment.

Fourteen community volunteers and Council staff worked together on Sunday 23 September to plant 70 native tube stock that has been propagated by Marrickville’s Community Nursery from locally sourced seed. Species included Kunzea, Hedgehog grass, Pig Face and Lomandra. The plantings will help fill gaps and provide additional diversity to this small but thriving recreated bushland area located near the intersection of Meeks and Victoria Roads, Marrickville.

Residents who had been involved in the original planting marvelled at how well the native plants have grown in a few short years. The grass roots action has transformed a once barren area into an urban oasis which provides welcome visual relief from the rail corridor and a pleasant place for bike riders and pedestrians to stop and rest.

Skate park users were surveyed through the Big Air School skate event held at Jack Shanahan Reserve (Dulwich Hill Skatepark) in August and 58 responses were received. We heard from visiting and local skaters and their families with most of the responses coming from regular park users in the 13-17 year age group. The main priorities for upgrading included improving the skate park design and surface, more seating and shade, lighting for night time use, graffiti art practice walls and better parking. There were also suggestions for the basketball court, a circuit path for kid's cycling, play equipment and more native planting to connect the park with the Greenway. A big thank you goes to the Big Air School for helping to make the survey available. We look forward to hearing from more skaters and other park users in the coming months.

This is your chance to get involved in the new approach to verge management where Council and the community work together to enhance the look of the streetscape and improve the local environment.

Seven streets have been selected for verge gardens installation when the new footpaths are built. These works will be staged over 6 months from September 2012.

Livingston Road, Petersham from New Canterbury Rd to Oxford Street (South side)

Enmore Road, Enmore from Stanmore Road to Addison Road (West side)

Unwins Bridge Road, St Peters from Campbell Street to Grove Street (south side)

Meeks Road, Marrickville from Sydenham Road to Marrickville Road (West Side)

Henry Street, Sydenham from Railway Road to the end (Both sides)

Park Road, Tempe

Holmesdale Street, Sydenham

If you live in one of these streets, you now have the opportunity to adopt-a-verge garden as your own. If you are interested in gardening we would like to hear from you. Register your interest with the Sustainable Streets Officer by phone 8595 2422 or email sstre@marrickville.nsw.gov.au.

Towards zero waste! We need to look at waste differently and your feedback will help Council develop new ways of managing and reusing materials that we would normally simply have thrown away. As a whole community we have to avoid creating rubbish, and recover and reuse as much material as we can.

There is simply no time to waste! Council would like to understand what you know about waste, how important it is to you and what you do in your household…. so please get involved and have your say today.
