Planning & development(prevention of high-end over-development); social justice & equity (encourage tolerance in the community, police and local magistrates); maintenance of green spaces (something Council already does well - these areas must be protected at all costs). Transport is a mess but that's a State-wide issue and in any case this area is extremely well serviced already by buses and trains: save your resources for fights you can win and issues that are truly local.

Council needs to preserve the unique heritage of this LGA. Houses and shops saved from demolition for 100 years need to preserved, adapted and reused instead of allowing short term interests to prevail. Council needs to ensure that a diverse range of shops continue to exist rather than have great shopping strips such as King St Newtown become tourist meccas filled only with cafes and clothes shops as in Paddington.
The basic services urgently need to be improved - street and laneway sweeping (with brooms not leaf blowers which just move the rubbish around), footpaths on shopping strips need to be cleaned regularly, graffiti needs to be removed and the abandoning of shopping trolleys need to be stopped.

I understand that AMP has gone directly to the NSW government for approval to develop Marrickville metro, doubling the size of the centre. About 2 years ago I was market researched about such a proposal, the questions were all along the lines of "marrickville needs a huge shopping centre to attract people to the area". I was quite definite in my veiw that Marrickville does NOT need a major regional shopping centre. The metro is perfectly adequate in terms of scale and services, and the last thing that Enmore needs is more traffic trying to negotiate crowded streets.
Surely a major shopping centre would draw even more patronage away from Marrickville Rd? That shopping strip is fast becoming a ghost town, long empty shops and $2 shops. While there are a couple of bright spots, and some decent eating places on the whole it is very sad and run down.
If AMP have gone directly to the state government, then it is inevitable that the plan will be approved.
I for one am not looking forward to more traffic barrelling down Enmore Rd, Edgeware Rd and Alice St.

In the short term, practical matters that are within the purview of council responsibilities such as effective rubbish collection and street cleaning, graffiti management, park maintenance, local cultural support etc...
Long term, lobbying federal and state governments for more effective public transport and good planning laws.
On a broader level, NIMBY attitudes are not necessarily driven by selfish conservative values. NIMBY can and often mean we care about our community and we want to sustain it.
