House pricing and development pressure are probably the two major issues. The council should respond to the sentiment of residents in this area and require new large developments to be six-star green.

Yes,there are a whole range of issues to do with housing and the built environment that are of great importance. For example, I agree with Tenant Advocate that boarding houses have often been a neglected black spot in the past – I saw one once that was just seething with thousands of cockroaches. Good to know there is one centre at least to mitigate this, Sue. Then there are old people living alone who may need more support.
Heritage is another major issue, & I support GRW there. We are fortunate to have a lot of heritage buildings and streetscapes, but more…

I agree with deconst to the extent that a fair and equitable housing mix is essential to the future and fabric of the area. We need low cost housing for singles and families and we need to co-ordinate services to ensure we take care of the disadvantaged amongst us. Let us not lose our heart in the rush to capitalise on our proximity to the city. Developers need to "get" this and make a meaningful contribution to our affordable housing needs either in kind or in levies.

Basically, more well designed public housing is urgently needed. The horse has already bolted in the private rental and buyers market. It's unbelievable that dilapidated old houses rent for $500 a week or sell for more than $500k! I can't see that changing however, so the Fed govt must act in conjunction with Council.

Council must resist the destruction or disastrous modification of heritage properties in residential and shopping precincts. We all have an interest in preserving our heritage, and it must not be sacrificed to short-term private interests. The Marrickville LGA has intact 100-year-old precincts due largely to benign neglect, and unrestrained gentrification must not be allowed to degrade the area. We owe this to future generations.

One of my main concerns is the management of traffic through the area and particularly the talk of an underground expressway through the south-north corridor where the previous above ground proposal was recently scrapped (I can't remember the official name). We were overjoyed when the RTA affectation on our property was lifted and now we may end up with a pollution filled chimney nearby instead.

Boarding Houses - Camperdown, Enmore, Stanmore and Newtown
There are approximately 200 boarding houses in the Inner West region. They provide a crucial housing alternative for people who can't afford private rental or are have not been able to obtain social housing. However, conditions in many boarding houses are appalling and residents have virtually no rights or protections available to private / social housing tenants.
There's a need for organised support for various organisations to promote services for boarding house residents as well as networking with boarding house owners. The owners need carrots and sticks to improve living conditions as well as establishing some sort of security of tenure for residents. At the moment, people living in boarding houses can be evicted overnight and have their possessions thrown out on the street.
Any input on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Our Place Support Centre in Enmore is a not for profit, privately run organisation that provides free meals and other services for boarding house residents (and homeless people). We represent the interests of boarders and lodgers and often intervene with owner/managers to ensure fair treatment. Call us or visit our website for more info.

- Dealing with the ever increasing number of cars. More local charges / restrictions needed.
- Repair and renewal of streetscapes. Many streets are unacceptably shabby.
- Planting and caring of trees. All streets should be treelined, not just those with the most expensive housing!
