Green the verges with native gardens and community vegetable gardens. It seems strange that rate payers money is wasted on Council staff mowing tiny patches of grass.
Comment 1.1 10 Feb 2010, 10:56 PM
Yes, even if the paths are considered Heritage. While they may be old, they are nothing special, just old bricks laid in a fancy(ish) pattern.
Comment 1.2 6 Mar 2010, 9:07 AM
Just so they don't take over the entire path, as it forces people out onto the road with prams and small kids.
Comment 2 27 Jan 2010, 11:40 AM
I really don't like graffitti - it seems to be a sign of discontent. But its a big issue to solve.
Comment 2.1 27 Jan 2010, 1:57 PM
and Littering as well
Comment 2.2 28 Jan 2010, 3:48 PM
Commitment to remove new graffiti within 48 hours, like other councils have done, and encourage places like the discount store near Dulwich High School not to sell cheap spray paint.
Comment 2.3 29 Jan 2010, 11:18 AM
I disagree - I think a lot of grafitti and street art can be a valuable expression of culture. I love the stencils and pasteups in the inner west, the yarn bombing in the back lanes of enmore and the massive 'JOY' sign that someone 'crocheted' on the fence near the train line just down from the Hub in Newtown.
I think it's really sad ho City of Sydney council hase wiped out much of the street art on that side of newtown and it's one of the things i really value about the Marrickville end of town.
Comment 2.3.1 29 Jan 2010, 6:26 PM
The stencils are ok - I'm rather fond of the tabby cat and maria callas that popup around my neck of the woods - but really a lot of the "art" is just a meaningless and unattractive scrawl.Witness the gradual disappearance of the Banksy on the side of Alfalfa House. That wasn't covered by "art" it was covered by vandalism.
Comment 2.3.1.1 19 Apr 2010, 5:00 PM
Stencils and thought provoking/mocking art yes - tagging no, simple!
Comment 2.3.2 8 Apr 2010, 10:54 PM
Murals are fine, tagging and random graffiti are not. They make the place feel unsafe and grubby.
Comment 2.4 10 Feb 2010, 10:58 PM
I think tagging is an issue, but their are many stimulating painted walls in the area.
Comment 3 27 Jan 2010, 11:41 AM
Yes I would love to see some street trees in my street - edible ones would be perfect. There are many people in our Street who would foster patch - the street would be cooler, prettier and help promote community spirit. Imagine if people could catch up while picking herbs under a lemon tree
Comment 3.1 29 Jan 2010, 11:19 AM
Yeah - yay for street trees and especially fruit trees! Newtown and Enmore are very hot in summer cause of all the concrete.
Comment 3.1.1 19 Apr 2010, 5:02 PM
Yes, yes, yes! Why do the eastern suburbs seem to have the greatest right to cool green streets. Most streets in Marrickville LGA are barren and hot.
Comment 3.2 29 Jan 2010, 11:19 AM

Comment 3.3 27 Mar 2010, 10:34 AM
Jacinta your idea of fruit trees is admirable and i do have plenty of fruit trees at home orange grapefruit , mandarin as with the vegies and herbs
it does take a fair bit of work and i must pick up the fallen fruit immediately otherwise i get pests in unbelievably quick could you imagine what a street would be really like if this was not done
Comment 4 27 Jan 2010, 11:43 AM
Dumped Rubbish - surely council rangers could report piles of dumped rubbish as they drive around the neighbourhood - piles of rubbish often stay for weeks. Also post some no dumping signs along with phone number to arrange pickup
Comment 4.1 27 Jan 2010, 12:57 PM
Do rangers really "drive around the neighbourhood"? I don't see them.
Council should be tougher, especially on repeat offenders.
Comment 4.1.1 27 Jan 2010, 2:55 PM
I've seen them drive up Campbell Street - so they do exist. Regular dumping spots should have notices posted
Comment 4.1.2 19 Apr 2010, 5:05 PM
Agreed! I don't think they actively patrol those areas that always seem to be festering with rubbish. There are areas that always seem to take dumped rubbish (Lord St near St Peters station is one example of many). Usually it's a design fault that just needs fixing up.
Comment 4.2 27 Mar 2010, 10:37 AM
on your dumped rubbish one well let me say behind my business dumpers are constant i reckon the council could catch them easily with a tad of patience as as regular as soon as they clean it the next one comes along
council needs to pick up there game
Comment 5 27 Jan 2010, 3:09 PM
Encourage use of bicycles by providing more parking facilities in shopping areas and outside stores, parks and pools etc. Also fix up the rough edges and surfaces on many streets. Put in more bicycle lanes where they are needed and improve access by making one way streets two way for bikes or making road closures accessible for bikes. Reduce speed limits to 50 or 40 or less in more areas. In particular, reduce Addison Rd to 50 from 60. Install a bicycle crossing at Stanmore Rd and Marchant St. Put a wider gap in the road closure at Charles St and Margaret St in Stanmore.
Comment 5.1 27 Jan 2010, 3:49 PM
can we just make all streets 50 - so much easier
Comment 5.1.1 27 Jan 2010, 6:32 PM
Make the residential streets people friendly not just car friendly.
All residential streets should be less than 50, probably 40 km/h or less. These streets are not to service through traffic just residents going to and from their homes. The lower the speed the safer and quieter it will be for all the residents.
Comment 5.1.1.1 29 Jan 2010, 11:22 AM
I would really like to see less cars on King St. It is so noisy and horrible because of the traffic - especially compared with say Brunswick Street in Melbourne. I know this seems wildly ambitious, but it would be so awesome to see the whole both outer lanes on King St and Enmore Road transformed from car parks to mass bike lanes. Ah well we can at least dream!
Comment 5.1.1.1.1 3 Feb 2010, 10:36 AM
I can't see this happening not with the RTA's current plan to extend the M5 to Sydney Park - so another 2 lanes full of cars trying to go up King Street or Euston Road
Comment 5.1.2 19 Apr 2010, 5:05 PM
40!
Comment 5.2 27 Jan 2010, 4:17 PM
Agree with the suggestions for improving bicycle access. You should add the specific suggestions for changes in particular streets to the forums for those areas, so they're not overlooked.
Comment 5.3 6 Mar 2010, 9:11 AM
I'd like some contraflow (against the one-way) bicycle lanes and cycleways like Sydney City is doing (though without the mass parking removal).
Comment 5.4 27 Mar 2010, 10:46 AM
i think that rules will need to be applied as the age of a cyclist can be a small child and putting them near roads because theres a cycle lane and believe me ive nearly been flattened by cyclists many times at my shop with them riding down the footpaths i now have to be vigilant and its all ages guys and girls young and old
i think we need to remove private cars from inner city zones or at least the business districts and maybe thats not the answer but i will say you can expect more horrific and debilitating injuries with and increase in cyclists they will certainly come of second best
there has to be a reduction in automobile traffic for a sucessful bicycle increase with safety a major issue
Comment 6 27 Jan 2010, 3:44 PM
Lobby state government for easy access train stations and easy access buses. So many people with children, and yet we still have no accessible stations within the LGA. And our street only has one easy access bus an hour. Not fun in the middle of summer with a toddler and baby.
Comment 6.1 6 Mar 2010, 9:09 AM
It's ridiculous, that Sydenham - a major interchange has no easy access and we still don't know when it will come
Comment 7 28 Jan 2010, 3:53 PM
Efforts to clean up the Cook's River are appreciated. Imagine if we could actually use our river for recreation like kayaking and canoeing? This would support water collection, wildlife, etc. Community gardens on the banks of the river might contribute to this. I'd love to be able to kayak in my neighborhood by 2021 - or preferably earlier!
Comment 7.1 27 Mar 2010, 10:56 AM
i grew up in earlwood not far from the cooks river and i remember back in the 80s talking with old MR Steel a local resident that grew up in the same area he told me he use to catch prawns and swim there as a boy at the time he was around 80 years old then so around 1910 the river was a magnificent water way, imagine the developement potential if you could moore your yatch ketch or any of those large expensive boats up and down the river and also use it as a means of transport what a way to go to work or just enjoy the ride
Poluters of this water way bearing the name of this countries founder old Jimmy Cook
I think that in this country laws for environmental poluters at any level individual coporations should be of a magnatude that will definately stop any type that feels he needs to damage where we live
Comment 8 6 Mar 2010, 9:06 AM
I'd like the Alexandria Canal path completed from Tempe Reserve to Bellevue Street so we don't need to ride along the highway with little kids to get to the river
Comment 9 14 Mar 2010, 4:01 PM
I wanted say Council that st peters area specifically from Princes Hwy May St to George St sydenham needs major upgrades to pavements trees footpaths and roads.
I have worked walking streets in this area say Silver Mary
Grove Florence Sutherland Frederick and would like to see more modernization in this area. The small industrial area Lackey Applebee Hutchinson needs facelift footpaths maybe new trees I find bottlebrush unsuitable for this area footpaths too confined and overgrowth often tops people walking footpath properly!
Real Estate prices could be improved greatly as in Marrackville by modern upgrades similiar to City Councils upgrade of Pyrmont near city

Simpson Park
while I think Council does good job on park the giant trees
overhanging Campbell St need trimming cutting back.Ive already seen branches hanging down too low over park benches which could break hit someone sitting on bench.
The area around park is littered with alcohol bottles from Town Country Hotel in unwins maybe new fencing better waste bins for recycling needed to make users put in these bins
Comment 10.1 27 Mar 2010, 10:59 AM
Make the town and country responsible and make the council also responsible as we pay the rates they are our servants give us value and stop letting me see shovel leaners
Comment 11 17 Mar 2010, 4:23 PM
May Lane in St Peters is used by many of us going to and from St Peters station.
It's a narrow one-way street with no footpaths, so we walk on the road. Almost every time I have to move out of the way to let cars past. If I'm walking to the station, the cars approach me from behind, and often surprise me.
It's common for several vehicles to be parked illegally, which further reduces the space available for cars and pedestrians to pass one another. Several businesses in the lane seem to use it for semi-permanent parking. There's also rubbish skips permanently left in the lane.
How about improving pedestrian amenity here by stopping the illegal parking and skips? Simple?
Comment 11.1 27 Mar 2010, 11:09 AM
Pedestrians arent meant to be on roads
let me say its hard enough to make business viable and give people jobs it would be far simpler of you took another route get a tad more exercise or should we just ban all business ban cars i dont think you have a valid complaint
people generally park illegally because there just isnt enough space and more than likely the business was there before you and if you dont want to be suprised stay alert cars will hurt you a mountain out of a mole hill really go fishing or enter a real issue
Comment 11.1.1 19 Apr 2010, 1:28 PM
Ther is no 'right to park' so illegal parking is not excused for this reason. Also, businesses have no right to long-term appropriation of public space with skips and the like.
Comment 11.2 19 Apr 2010, 5:10 PM
Yes, the whole May Street area needs to be zoned pedestrian as the first priority. Cars should be forced to give way and / wait.
Comment 12 22 Mar 2010, 11:59 AM
I was asked to put this comment in the Sydenham camp too. I live in Marrickville, but often go to Sydenham for entertainment at the Red Rattler:
I just want to congratulate Council on supporting independent arts and culture venues such as the Red Rattler, The Vanishing Point and SNO contemporary art gallery located in the Marrickville lga. These venues, amongst others, have added enormous diversity and richness to the cultural lives of residents in this area and for those coming from other parts of Sydney and even inter-state and internationally.
The Sydenham industrial area in particular has great potential to grow more…
Comment 13 27 Mar 2010, 10:29 AM
I would like to see council take a far more active role in environmental issues my expertise is exactly that and i am at the forefront in my field in this particular technology and low and behold ive been in this area for nearly six years and not one council employee has made an effort to contact me nor have i had any help from any governing authority
i love our planet greening it seems simple greening verges well theres plenty of grass around
I look to major issues such as air quality ,water, soil
i will attempt to contact more…
Comment 14 27 Mar 2010, 3:10 PM
I would like to see Council improve the footpaths in the entire municipality, especially the footpaths around Marrickville Metro
Comment 15 23 Apr 2010, 8:55 PM
a lame aquatic thingy is planned for Steele Park
- why not just build a swimming pool and be done with it?
The only pool down this end of the council's area is at a privately run gym in Toyer St.
People want to go swimming, not just splash their feet through a puddle with a few jet sprays.
Comment 16 23 Apr 2010, 8:56 PM
Limit activity of hoons with speed humps, etc. in known street racing areas such as Carrington Rd, Bayview Ave, Richardson Cres - sick to death of being woken at all hours of the night by loud cars burning through Sth Marrickville and Tempe.
Comment 17 23 Apr 2010, 8:57 PM
Being more vigilant to stop the idiots who ride their mini-bikes along the parkways along the Cooks River - noisy and dangerous, they often have pillion passengers (usually kids) and none of them wear helmets, they run pedestrians off the path - when we ring council to complain we're told that it's a police matter, the police say it's a council matter.
Comment 18 23 Apr 2010, 8:57 PM
Safety, adequate lighting of public areas.
Comment 19 23 Apr 2010, 8:57 PM
Bins and regular collection of those bins in park areas.
