As grand as it sounds (and yes it's probably un-viable), I dream of New Canterbury Rd in Dulwich Hill (where the IGA is) going under the existing road so that our shopping area can thrive more. It's a fast-moving road with heavy traffic and it makes it fairly unpleasant to be spending time along there, especially with young children in tow. A fresh approach to our little shopping centres might see them thrive more.

Take out bendy trees - I keep hitting my head on two bendy trees on Denison Road! They bend right over the footpath and often I'm tending more…

Mike Comment 1.1 3 Feb 2010, 2:37 PM

Please get rid of the bendy trees and straggly bushes! On some streets like Tupper St, it's dangerous to walk on the footpath at night because you risk being brained or poked in the eye, so people walk down the middle of the street risking traffic. Bottlebrushes are terrible street trees as they collapse over the footpath or even the road, making parking or car-exit awkward. They tend to split very easily in stronger winds as well.

I agree with taking responsibility for cleaning up the dog poo. My observation is that most of it comes from owners sneaking out after dark to walk their dogs (I've challenged one woman who empties her dog outside my house regularly). if the council supported dog parks properly they'd find that when there are gatherings of dog owners, the poo dropping gets policed immediately and the waste disposed of appropriately.

No one likes to be in a pool that's being peed in, and so it is with poo in off-leash areas. Chase away the owners, and the poo goes back onto the streets, as unpoliced as the rising tide of human rubbish being dumped there.

YES! PLLLLEEAAAAASSsssssssssssseeeeeeee give us some more off-leash areas! The closest ones are the tiny fenced area in Sydenham and then the big park in Leichhardt. That is all! Give dog owners back their local leash-free areas, even if it is just a gated area of an existing park - do that, and you will have more happy dog owners, and less poo on the sidewalks. Seriously, I have almost stepped on dog poo on the pavement so many times - it isn't just restricted to the grass sections! Provide dog owners with these places and bins and dog poo bags (like at the Leichhardt park, there is even a dog behaviour class on Sundays and a dog friendly cafe) and owners will be more accountable to picking up after their pooches. Yeo park is huge - why not give dog owners a section of that? It's HUGE! Go on...

I agree with the fundamental idea of some sort of bypass for that part of New Canterbury Road which is the shopping centre. The Marrickville Road shops are quite a presentable area but the New Canterbury Road is quite dreary.

ccahill800 Comment 2 8 Feb 2010, 2:46 PM

There are many residents of the area who have dogs, yet there are no leash free dog areas in any of our parks. We should at least have some leash free time in designated areas so both the humans and the dogs can happily exercise together.

And I would rather have dog friendly outdoor tables at cafes than ones that allow outdoor smoking!

Amadeus Comment 2.1 5 Mar 2010, 12:03 AM

I hate outdoor smoking too. Can council take a lead from that other council on the news recently and ban smoking in busy public places such as outside the library where people sit and each their lunch, or at the bus stops? I want to catch the bus, not catch lung cancer. Thanks!

Dogs are a nuisance in the city. Owners feed them expensive food made in the USA and Canada. People who own dogs would be better off fostering a child or donating the money they spend on dogs every year to charity. It is cruel having dogs in the city - and filthy.

I have two relatively small issues which I think can be addressed by Council engaging the local residents to be more proactive in maintainiing their neighbourhood(there is a predominant percentage of home owners in my area).

The two issues are :-

(1)the general cleanliness of the streets and lanes. Empty bottles and cans and paper (advertising pamphlets mainly)are strewn along our streets and lanes, however local residents do not bother to pick up this rubbish that lies in front of their houses and place it it their adequately sized general rubbish and recycling bins. They obviously consider it to be someone elses more…

Amadeus Comment 3.1 5 Mar 2010, 12:07 AM

Speaking of lanes, can someone please offer a solution to the lane that goes from just past the IGA on New Canterbury Rd to the Seaview St carpark? The amount of times that I have walked through that lane to catch someone urinating either on the ground or against the walls... old and young, day or night - why do they do it? There are plenty of cafes who have toilets and a public library with a public toilet! WHY?! People walk their groceries through that lane - their food. It's just not hygenic! (Not to mention the dumping of rubbish there too)

Council needs to join up with State government and build some good quality hostel accommodations around Petersham and transfer boarding house residents into these new subsidized accommodations. These must be staffed by people skilled in people management - oh - and a cleaner in each premises. If we are really truthful we should staff these accommodations with community mental health specialists. The boarding houses that are around the Council buildings in Petersham are the shame of Petersham - the shame of Marrickville Council. How can the Council operate and Councillors and staff see these every day and not act on more…

Gilbert Barry Reserve located next to St Marouns School could be fixed up more making it a great location for parents to wait for their kids after school. The mums and dads could be more relaxed and have opportunity to talk to each other whilst waiting for kids.

Pyramid Comment 6 12 Mar 2010, 7:59 PM

1. Put public toilets into all the strip shopping areas. This will then bring back families and all the adults who don't want to be caught short. It is just hopeless trying to shop in Dulwich Hill, Petersham, and Newtown.

2. Publicise our restaurant precincts in the Sydney information centers.

3. Keep up the festivals such as the Newtown festival and the Portuguese festival. These help to give character - people look forward to them all year.

4. Work with partners to find a solution to the Boarding House phenomena. It is pretty much a state scandal and it isn't Marrickville COuncil's fault. more…

local mum Comment 7 29 Mar 2010, 4:15 PM

Increased traffic in the local area is terrible! Crystal street is worse on a Saturday than the week days! Livingstone road is full of heavy trucks roaring past at all hours, and during the night! Its unbearable for noise and there are very few places to safely cross this road, particularly near the Petersham shops end.

The train frequency and access to the station are woeful! Most trains flash past Petersham. Train services need to improve - & bring on the light rail!

The boarding houses issues which rightly figure prominently in these forums are truly a disgrace. Mental health and drug more…

Improve the space around Lewisham station. The strip of shops near the station are nondescript and rundown. Why not enliven the space with some community artwork, cafes or something so that Lewisham has more sense of community?
