Art in the community. No single socio-economic background. The heritage of the area.

Access to both Inner West and Bankstown train lines and to many bus rtes means don't have to own car; generally tolerant attitude of residents (altho over my 15yrs in Newtown I think that here has been a rise in snobbishness re house appearance); Koori-aware council; unique(?) range of heritage architectural styles creates visual feast and sense of diversity mirroring diverse community.

Diversity = tolerance and I think Marrickville L.G.A. is the poster-child for that. The richness of the indigenous imprint on the area is a plus, the mix of ethnicities and the vibrant influence of students are some of the things that make it great. I would hate to see the area 'gentrified' to the extent that we lose that. Low cost and affordable housing is an essential component: Council seems to be well aware of the importance of this issue and I hope they take the lead on it.

Intact heritage streetscapes; walkability - accessible shops and services without the need for motorised transport; controls on inappropriate development; and a sense of community amongst tolerant and civilised neighbours who care about the area and each other.

Parks

Council needs to look at the work Sydney City Council is doing with parks in our neighbouring suburbs. Our parks are sadly neglected in comparison.

We have some of Sydney's most historic and beautiful architecture along king street and enmore road - especially when you look up! However a lot of it is approaching 120+ years old. And a lot has been divided into separate lots so there is no single body looking after facade maintenance. The unique shopfront architecture gives Newtown and Enmore its fantastic character.

Surely there is something council can do to ensure this heritage is improved with some kind of facade gentrification/beautification, and not lost with future redevelopment. ?
