Definately with the State to look at public transport and cycling networks (see my comment above). Also as identified in the other forum partnerships with other councils would help. The less we rely on the State the better.

We cannot be independent of the state for public transport.

Along with many other walkers and cyclists, I use the cycle ways along the Cooks river to commute to work and have the following observations.

1. they are much improved and continue to improve. Congratulations to all councils and the Federal and state govts.

2. most dog owners keep their dogs restrained and are respectful of cyclists.

3. Some dog owners risk serious injury to cyclists by not restraining their dogs - I have had several near misses with dogs running across the cycle way.

4. Some walkers do not know that the convention more…

Poison? There is poison? Is this like rat poison where a dog or wild animal could come along, eat it and die? What the-

Well said Chook!

Re 4. While cycling towards a group (man and 2 young children) on a shared path outside a children's playground on Monday I rang my bell twice, called out twice ("coming through") with no response whatsoever. The man said (as I went off the path to get around them) "He doesn't know what the bell means". I would have said if I'd had time - "Well, teach him!". Education is needed as well as signs.

Re 5, 6 and 7. I totally agree. Whose idea was it to put bike markings on busy, narrow roads that disappear at roundabouts and humps?

If cycling is to appeal to commuters (especially women)it needs to be much safer. Bike paths need to be built separate from roads and ideally from pedestrian paths as well - the needs (and speeds) are very very different.

Taliesin Comment 1.1.3 1 May 2010, 11:32 AM

Good points. I walk and cycle on the paths. The recent additions of centre markings has been very positive. Reminding people they are on a roadway of sorts, although how to remind them of which is their left or their right might be a bit harder!

The number of people walking their dogs on the path without a leash is still very high. It's quite remarkable when they could just step off the path and walk them quite safely on the grass! This must be the number one danger to cyclists (and to dogs).

I agree with Chook's point that we can't be independant of the state government. This can be best appreciated by the recent debate on the light rail connection.

If you have seen the Sydney Bus' discussion paper you would realise that parts of the Dulwich Hill area will be even more poorly served than they are now. Council should hammer this issue with all its might! If we cannot have better bus services then attack the Light Rail issue with vim and vigour!

Amadeus Comment 1.2.1 5 Mar 2010, 12:20 AM

The 425 is a really hand direct route for me to go to Sydenham station and catch a train (express) direct to the city or Bondi. I like the 425, and hope the replacement bus is very similar! Or I will be really disappointed (and heaps of other people who also use this bus :( )

The Council is extreme about environment stuff. Too extreme. It is like this is taking over. Everything you see about Council has environment messages, like greens have been let loose and costing lots of money without really knowing they are doing the right thing. Leave the green message to Federal Government - that should be the extent of the partnership on this. Just hand it over and step back.

Amadeus Comment 2.1 5 Mar 2010, 12:18 AM

I like that council is trying to be proactive and be green. It is one of the things I like most about our council.

However, I have noticed council and council buildings do still go overboard with the printing and handing out of council papers.

Council sends a Marrickville Matters to every household, why do you need to send fifty million other copies to each local business and public library? What a waste of paper!
